"Ten Little Heroes"
The action is non stop when the boys get together and play at 'super heroes', but everything doesn't always go to plan... A rhyming narrative with counting element, illustrated by animator, Alex Slack. Make your little hero the hero in his own book! Go to Frecklebox.com
"All in the Woods" by J.R.Poulter, illustrated by Linda S. Gunn nominated for OPSO Media Awards, 2011, Inter-generational category!
Everyone in Pete’s family is moving or adjusting to a move, it seems. Change brings challenges, not least of which are the family’s nosey, new neighbours. Everyone says what they think, but are they right? Things are not always as they seem… and who is the mysterious little visitor who changes everything?
A story that bridges generations, told with humour and an underlying plea for the preservation of wildlife habitats.
The beautiful poster was created by Tara Hale to celebrate the release of my first book in the UK!
This was a fun collaboration with wonderful US watercolourist, Linda S. Gunn. My son, Seb, was the model for the central character.
First review through and first for USA -
"With sensitive and humorous prose, J.R. McRae tells a story of family life, love, and acceptance with beautiful illustrations by Linda Gunn. When Pete finds a furry hero, Ink, to solve his dinnertime woes, a nosey neighbor jumps to conclusions that enlarge as Pete's grandpa comes to visit. When Mrs. Allan's mother-in-law, Nanny, and Pete's grandpa take off for an early-morning drive, the assumptions increase until Ink and Grandpa solve the mystery. Perfect for young readers, this book speaks of a boy and his grandpa, a mother defending her son from gossip, and the surprise of love at any age." ~Janice Phelps Williams, author, illustrator www.janicephelps.com

CRICHTON Award Winner and Family Therapists' Award nominee,
Mending Lucille
An insightful picture book about a small girl's loss of her mother. Mending Lucille charts the process of grief and healing through a young girl's attachment to a broken doll, Lucille. One day, she and her father meet Chrissie, a kind waitress whose mending of the doll is a catalyst, the mending thread encompassing more than the doll..Ages 3 to adult.Illustrated by Sarah Davis [http://sarahdavisillustration.com/home.html ]
As an author I was very privileged to be allowed to have my head and go seek my own illustrator. I found Sarah on the web. The moment I saw her 'butterfly man' picture I knew she was the one - she would intuitively see all the layers to my story - and she did. To get Sarah's side of the creative story, go to her profile on JacketFlap.Though the actual story took me under 15 minutes to write, it was a long time 'cooking'. The impetus came from my experience of unresolved grief in my own and extended family. Already the book is working to heal. Adults who experienced loss, bereavement or abandonment as children/young people have told me of its cathartic effect - 'I felt a sense of release.' 'Finally, someone understands what I went through! The Australian Centre for Grief Education at Victoria’s Monash Medical Centre has included "Mending Lucille" on its list of recommended books for biblio-therapy.

The Girl Who Married a Fly
I wrote story number 13, "The Stray"in this CBC award winning collection.
Getting into this collection which was published by the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) was very competitive, so writer friend Mark Svendsen (story No 12, "Killing Time") and I were very honoured to be included.
FREE Teaching notes are available through the AATE site and are a click away below. The book has been used extensively in schools all over Australia. and
PS No, I'm not superstitious!

"The Girl Who Married a Fly" is a Children's Book Council of Australia
CBC NOTABLE BOOK AWARD 1998 The Girl Who Married a Fly (Audio Cassettes)Narrated by David Tredinnick
All the stories, complete and unabridged, superbly narrated by David Tredinnick. Louise Braille Books, 1998. 5 audiocassettes. ISBN 0732022983
Extract:
“My parents are dead – I think. Ah, I dunno. Others in the home had visits, outings, not me, not till this year anyway. I’ve been in this place forever. I hate it! Even the short termers talk about ‘getting out’. The place’s dark, high ceilings hovering over you like something that’s going to pounce, like the strays that raid the bins. Here – no names, you get a number, a different one for each section. First, I was in D Block, babies’ block, all the little kids under five go there. I was number 63. You don’t forget your number, all your stuff’s numbered. Then I was in B, six to nine go in there. My number was 17. Now I’m in E Block, ten to thirteen year-olds. It’s the last. You’re on your own after that. My number – thirteen. Unlucky? No way. I’m a survivor! Some don’t.
I started high school this year. I hate it. I’m different. The other kids ’ve got the uniform. The home can’t afford that, so we wear this cheap stuff they got bulk. It makes us different, makes us fight. I’m good at that, real good. Why? Cause I don’t give a stuff! I mean there are no rules, get me, no rules! You fight to win or you don’t fight!” [Page 155]
Reviews
1. The Girl Who Married a Fly and Other Stories, Hyde, Michael (ed) - A must for your high school English classes is The Girl who Married a Fly and Other Stories, edited by Michael Hyde, a new anthology of stories for secondary students that was released last year by the Australian Association for the teaching of English (AATE) and in audio form by Louis Braille Audio in 1998. There are a variety of stories, some humorous, some serious and others mysterious but just the sort of stories that will appeal to students in Years 7-9.

2. The Girl Who Married a Fly and Other Stories, Hyde, Michael (editor) - This collection of short stories was first published by the Australian Association for the Teaching of English.
The strength of the collection as a whole is its variety, probably due to the broad brief that established and emerging writers were given, when invited to submit their work. The stories often involve school experiences but aren't slavish to that setting, so themes, ideas and scenarios are allowed to develop that acknowledge young people's lives in their total environment.
Narrator David Tredinnick is an experienced reader who gives a competent …. performance…… using the authors' comments on their inspiration for the stories as interludes between each reading As it stands this is a compilation of stories of high standard…... Age 12+
